Luann Carman has been a professional pianist since 1978 and holds two degrees in piano performance, a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Arts. She currently is the accompanist for the Great Oak High School Choirs, Southwest Women’s Choir, the United Church of the Valley, and various competitions, including our very own Temecula Valley Orchestra Concerto Competition.
A good accompanist has somewhat of a “sixth sense” for knowing what to play next, when to offer pitches without being asked, play entrances or parts along with the accompaniment where needed, follow the direction of the conductor, and have the flexibility to “fake it” by following a soloist in the event he misses an entrance.
My experience as an accompanist goes back as far as high school and college. It was an honor to accompany for Frank Pooler, renowned choral director, at home and abroad.
She taught at California State University Fullerton, California Lutheran College, Goldenwest College, Santa Ana College, and Cerritos Community College. She has authored two piano books for Warner Brothers and Hal Leonard Publications and is currently working on another.
Katie Kinnaman is an active-duty military spouse, mother of two little boys, and accomplished pianist who loves teaching piano and making music in collaboration with other musicians. She started accompanying vocalists, choirs, and instrumentalists when she was about 12 years old in church, school, and the community. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Biola University and her Master of Arts degree in Piano Pedagogy from SDSU under pedagogue Dr. J. Mitzi Kolar. She has accompanied for the Biola University Chorale, the instrumental program at Point Loma Nazarene University, the choral program at MVHS, and several church choirs during her time living in San Diego, Japan, Virginia, and the Inland Empire. Katie is currently living in Murrieta where she is an active member of the Music Teacher’s Association of CA and its local Temecula Valley Branch, teaches piano in her home studio, and accompanies for vocal and instrumental studios
