Teaching days: Monday – Friday
Ages 4 yrs.- adult
Hello and welcome!
Thank you for visiting my web page and congratulations on your piano endeavors!
I have coached students, for over thirty years, some of whom pursued a more rigorous, competitive course of study and some who played recreationally. The most important component of lessons that I found is to help students enjoy their study. It is a balance of enjoyment and discipline, and encompasses learning the necessary skills for progress. Finding motivational pieces is a key component of my job. I strive to inspire my students, make learning fun, and challenge them to progress
Lessons cover: technique, skills, theory, performance repertoire, sight reading, ear training, and improvisation.
Performance Opportunities: There are regular opportunities for students to participate in recitals, festivals, and competitions, from early to advanced levels. Preparation for success is a careful process and produces award winning students, many of which I have had the pleasure to coach. Further, participation in piano study and these events is quite helpful when documented on college applications.
Lessons available for ages 4 & up:
Ages 4-6: My First Piano Adventures by Faber is, I believe, the best method written for piano. This is a magical age and the books are full of delightful pieces and learning exercises.
Ages 7-9: There are many methods for this age group to choose from. Some move quicker than others and all have the same basic early material. These books are colorfully attractive for young children.
Pre-teen and teen: Again, this has the same basic material, but moves a bit faster and has a slightly more “grown-up” presentation. I prefer the Faber method for this age group.
Adult: Many adult students “return” to piano and are more like transfer students. I have taught many “beginner” adults in community college piano classes as well. Adult students are a delight to work with and have a deep enjoyment of learning to play.
Piano for singers: This is a chordal approach for those who would like to accompany themselves while singing.
Music Major: Ms. Carman taught at the college level for 20 years and can enthusiastically prepare students toward a major in music.
I look forward to working with you on this wonderful journey of making music.
Luann Carman has been a professional pianist since 1978 and holds two degrees in piano performance, a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Arts. She taught at CSU, Fullerton, California Lutheran College, and Goldenwest, Santa Ana, and Cerritos Community Colleges. She has authored two piano books for Warner Brothers and Hal Leonard Publications and is currently working on another. She currently is the accompanist for the Southwest Women’s Choir, the United Church of the Valley, and Idyllwild Arts Academy.
